It is the largest current producer of gold in Colorado, and produced 211,000 troy ounces of gold in 2014.

Cripple Creek District Mining History. The Cripple Creek mining district lies on the southwestern flank of 14,115 foot high Pikes Peak. Gold was discovered in 1890 by ranch hand-turned-prospector, Bob Womack. Relatively meager placers led to the discovery of rich vein deposits.

Gold Quartz Mine. There has been extensive placer mining over the property for over 100 years, with a reported two pound gold nugget being found. A thousand hand panners lived and worked the gold on Hixon Creek, and survived the depressions of troubled time.

Gold and platinum were also reported in placers in the Frank Creek area in similar proportions. In addition to placer gold operations, four underground mines - Cariboo Gold Quartz, Island Mountain, Mosquito Creek and Cariboo-Hudson - have operated in the district.
